Rocky and Bullwinkle Reboot

I LOVE Rocky and Bullwinkle. I grew up watching this show and it still makes me laugh to this day. It was ahead of its time with its clever use of puns and fourth wall breaking.

I knew about the two movies based off this beloved series and I vaguely knew about this reboot. It's not airing on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, or any channels on regular television. This series is an Amazon Prime exclusive. This isn't too surprising considering streaming services are taking over.

Let's start with the pros:

1) Voice acting. The voice acting is decent. The characters sound like their older counterparts. Tara Strong (Bubbles from PPG, Dil Pickles, Timmy Turner) voices Rocky and she's good as always.

2) Humor. The humor is actually spot-on. The original series relied heavily on puns and breaking the fourth wall. The reboot doesn't disappoint. There were some funny moments that seemed to pay homage to the original.

3) Sticking to the storyline. Just like in the original, Boris and Natasha are after "moose and squirrel" as ordered by Fearless Leader.

Now for the cons:

1) Animation. The animation is ugly. I know, the original wasn't great looking either. However, that was the 60's and limited animation was used a lot back then. The reboot, like most 2D cartoons now, uses Flash. I hate Flash. It's cheap looking and ugly. Limited animation is ugly too, but it was used during a time when studios didn't have large budgets and there was limited technology. The animation is trying hard to be like the original, but it's so loud and hideous.

2) Ditched the other characters. This is a minor nitpick for me. The original series had shorts featuring other characters like Dudley Do-Right, Aesop and Son, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The reboot does not feature any of those. I'm actually curious as to what a reboot of Dudley Do-Right would be like.

3) Character design. It's also ugly. Rocky's aviator cap looks too large for his head. Natasha's head looks like the Viacom V of Doom. Bullwinkle makes some god-awful facial expressions. It all looks yucky.

Some observations I made about the original and the reboot:

1) Rocky was the smart one in the original. In this one, he's as dumb as Bullwinkle.

2) Captain Peachfuzz is an African-American woman in the reboot. Nothing wrong with that, actually. My theory is that she's his daughter. She does favor him a lot.

3) I seriously want to see a reboot of Dudley Do-Right. Nell was the first female cartoon character I had a crush on.

4) They ditched the original theme song.

5) Boris and Natasha are not a couple in this one. Also, their accents are't as thick. I guess so it'll seem more PC.

So, is the reboot any good? I honestly couldn't get into it. It's not as loathsome as the Wacky Races reboot. It's just.....eh. It has the same humor as the classic, but it's nowhere near as charming.
