So the wrestlers of WWE met the Scooby gang and that was weird as shit. This time, they'll meet The Jetsons. Yay.
I grew up watching The Jetsons. They're iconic, much like their prehistoric counterparts The Flintstones. I guess WWE saw this as an opportunity to appeal to not only wrestling fans, but also to fans of the classic cartoon. What's weird is that they chose a cartoon from the 60's to cross over with. At least with Scooby Doo, they're still cranking out movies, reboots, and spin offs so it's still relevant. I don't think many kids will be familiar with The Jetsons. Oh well, if Tom and Jerry can cross over with the Wizard of Oz, then I guess WWE can cross over with 60's cartoons.
So what is this space age adventure all about?
SPOILER ALERT!
We start out like a typical episode of The Jetsons, George is getting chewed out by his boss Mr. Spacely. Spacely sends him on an assignment with some robot workers. George being the dumb, lazy sitcom husband makes the robots do all the work. While inspecting a hole dug by the robots, George makes a discovery. Big Show is frozen in ice. How did he get there?
I kind of lied when I said the movie starts out like an episode of The Jetsons. It starts out with the WWE wrestlers signing autographs. Big Show and Sheamus are scheduled to have a match for the belt only to have it canceled by Vince McMahon due to inclement weather. This pisses off Big Show who flies a plane through a snowstorm to get to the arena. That's a thing I just said. The plane crashes and that's how Show got buried in ice.
Okay back to the Jetsons. George tries to hide Big Show from his boss by taking him home. That doesn't work out because his boy Elroy takes the wrestler to school for Show and Tell. The kids are baffled to see a human wrestler since human wrestling is considered obsolete. The WWE in Orbit City now stands for Wrobot Wrestling Entertainment and the wrestlers are now robots. Basically a Roman Reigns match (yeah I went there).
Big Show scoffs at the idea of robots wrestling and decides to wreak havoc on Orbit City. He turns the robot wrestlers into his minions that do his evil bidding. The Jetson family has to stop Big Show so they go back in time to get Sheamus to stop him. I'm leaving a lot of small details out because I hate writing summaries.
The Jetsons not only get Sheamus, they get Seth Rollins, the Usos, Alicia Fox, and Vince McMahon as well. When they get to Orbit City, Big Show has taken over much like Biff Tannen in Back to the Future 2. The Jetsons and the WWE wrestlers fight off the evil wrestler robots. In the end, instead of Wrobot Wrestling, Orbit City now has human wrestlers and the WWE superstars go back to their time.
So what did I think of Jetsons and WWE: Robo Wrestlemania? To be honest, I actually liked this one. This is way better than the Scooby Doo Speed Demon movie. The WWE wrestlers don't dominate the entirety of the film like they did in Speed Demon. The Jetsons are the main characters like they should be. The storyline is entertaining. Big Show was always a good heel so making him the villain made sense.
Yeah, the wrestling scenes are cringey, but more tolerable than seeing the WWE stars drive souped up cars. The violence is more cartoony but that's understandable since it's intended for children. The animation is good and resembles the classic Hanna Barbera style. The voice acting is also good considering the original voice talent (with the exception of Frank Welker) are either dead or retired. Even the WWE wrestlers did a fine job. My only nitpick with the dialogue was Roman Reigns, whose lines consisted of "Believe that".
The WWE talent involved included Sheamus, Big Show, Alicia Fox, the Usos, Vince McMahon, Michael Cole, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Dolph Ziggler, and Stardust. There are Kane and Undertaker bots, but they have no speaking parts. Ziggler, Kane, Undertaker, and Stardust are only in robot form, so fans of them might be disappointed.
Here are some more things in this movie I liked:
1) There were some actual funny jokes and lines. The best character and the one with the best lines had to be Rosie the robot. She was the best character in the original series and she was the best here. She was snappy as always and Tress MacNeille did an excellent job voicing her. I loved seeing her flirt with the Roman Reigns bot.
2) The wrestlers made for good characters, well most of them anyway. Roman, Dolph, the Usos, and Stardust were my least favorite. Like I said before, Big Show made a good villain. I've never been a big Sheamus fan, but he was okay here and his interactions with the Jetsons and Show were amusing. Alicia Fox looks stunning in real life and in animated form. George Jetson thought so too.
3) While the fight scenes were cheesy and toned down for a younger audience, I did like the brawl between Sheamus and Big Show where they were surrounded by space cars. It reminded me of the parking lot brawls from the Ruthless Aggression era. I kind of miss those.
Overall, I enjoyed Jetsons and WWE: Robo Wrestlemania. It's a fun little movie that can appeal to fans of WWE, young and old. Kids will like seeing their favorite wrestlers and adults will like seeing cartoon characters from their childhood. Of course, it's an obvious s cash grab on the part of both the WWE and Warner Brothers. That can be said about all of these crossover movies. However, the WWE wrestlers are treated as guest stars and not the main focus. I prefer it that way because it doesn't feel as forced.
If you don't like wrestling, you will hate this. You'll probably find it boring and cringey. WWE fans might even agree considering there are so many of these animated crossovers. I'm very critical of anything put out by WWE, but I can honestly say I like this movie. It had funny moments and a decent story.
Two down, three more to go.
